Wagon runs third due on multi alarm fire in New Carrollton
By Volunteer Recruiter Brian Clements
On Monday, September 17, 2018 shortly after 3:30pm, Engine 131 was alerted as the third due engine company on a reported apartment fire in the 5300 block of 85th Avenue in New Carrollton (28-06 box) with reported entrapment.
Engine Co. 28 (West Lanham Hills) arrived on the scene to find fire showing through the roof from a three story garden style apartment building.
As crews were accessing the fireground, it was noticed that there were water supply issues and a second alarm was sounded soon thereafter.
Additional special alarms bringing seven more engine companies on top of the second alarm were dispatched due to hydrant issues in the complex and a precautionary third alarm was struck.
As crews were operating, a firefighter had to be rescued from a third floor balcony after a partial roof collapse blocked his exit. Crews used a 35’ ground ladder to rescue the member. A Mayday Task Force was then sounded bringing additional units. The firefighter was not injured and was not assisted down by other personnel. Once on the ground the Mayday Task Force was then cancelled.
Engine 131 operated on the fireground for over four hours. A total of four buildings and 44 apartments were damaged in the fire. The fire is currently under investigation.
